Audio Terrorist (band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coined by the band of the same name, Audio Terrorist describes someone who is adventurous with sound. They may be unconventional, and asymetrical when it comes to the audio they create. The result is somewhat chaotic and unprofessional.

The term was introduced to the world wide web by Kalib DuArte in 1992, but was originally created in 1984 after reading a passage in Kathy Acker’s “Blood and Guts in High School”. It was applied to series experimental raw tape recordings that would get radio play the late 80.s and 90s on San Jose State University’ KSJS station. Various DJ’s would continue to promote the band well into the 2000s including Jean Batt’s Guinness Book of Records show “Orchestrated Noise”. The University was also home to several experimental electro-acoustic groups creating art noise performances such as Larry Wendt's "Sadness Without Brains". and Ryan Torchia’s and Gary Singh’s  "Gas Chamber Orchestra".

Originally the band continued to develop along the same electronic art lines, with Kalib's blending found sounds with more conventional composition. After several all Theremin performances in 1992 the group began integrating a more goth-industrial style in to the sound. This aspect of the bands style, plus reference and reflection on popular suburban culture while disecting it, continues to this day.

The band caught the eye and ears of software programmer Eric Wenger at 1997’s Asylum show for the launch of gallery shows at San Francisco’s Stormy Leather fashion boutique. Eric would go on to produce several music videos for the band. Several band members would provide vocals for Eric’s 1999 album An Mil.

Shortly after this the group caught the attention of performance artist Frank Moore of Luver.com infamy. A series of interviews and performances supporting his show later, the group was asked to perform the sound track to the film “Feisto”.

Soundtracks for Cleo Dubois’s “The Pain Game” and “Tie Me Up” would drive the group musically and be released on the albums “Our Tribe”, “Dance” and “Hybrid”. The latter become the basis for a spin off band Cuir Bleu. The music would be used once more as material for “The Sacred Art of Strip Tease” DVD and remain popular with fans.

In contrast, 2008-2011 saw a return to the early piano musing of 1984’s 27 Meditations mixed with electronic beats and vocals on the “Wander” album and a mainly instrumental release “Glitch”. The later inspired by Science Fiction film. Touring regularly since 2010, band has announced work on a “best of” and two new albums in the coming year.
