The Male Orgasm

I would like to talk about what would appear to be a rare topic--male orgasm. In the media, male ejaculation is a common topic that outweighs female orgasm, yet male orgasm would seem to be less common than female ejaculation. My research into male orgasm began in 1991 and at the time I found no literature at the various sex positive bookstores or in the California State University system. Almost all references were really about ejaculation. This omission began to be more than frustrating, that is to say such a glaring lack of information was intriguing. Sometime later, due to my constant chatter about orgasm, a friend loaned me Peter Reich's "A Book of Dreams." The book's author mentioned that his father Wilhelm had, in 1924, published a book on orgasm research. I thought wow, 1924! Heading to the university library, I found Reich's books covered in dust and last checked out in 1974. One title shined through the dust, "The Function of the Orgasm." "My god, someone already did this research and was forgotten," I thought.

Four years later I find that not much has changed. I recently got a copy of "The Male Multiple Orgasm" but this was about a specific Tantric technique to modify one's orgasmic response to have a greater variation in possible expression. Specifically, it covered how to keep having orgasms without ejaculation. In other words, if you're having them here's how to have more. There was no discussion of orgastic impotence or techniques to have them "naturally." Another orgasm camp would appear to be E.S.O.

E.S.O. is the practice of extending the moment of orgasm for up to and sometimes beyond an hour. Panathanic acid is taken before hand to aid in breaking down the build up of lactic acid and thus reduce chances of cramping. This discipline brings the person to the brink of orgasm and then holds the person in that state. This triggers a completely different orgastic state. The spasms are gentle and full bodied. However, it does mean a lot of work for the partner.

While undoubtedly enjoyable, neither of these diciplines cover the area of male orgastic impotence. Understanding orgastic impotence in women helps but even that information is based more on personal experience rather than detailed study. The solution need not be mystical (although I find nothing wrong with mysticism), and or based on an optimization program. Simply doing what's natural and kick start the body towards that direction.

After 72 years, the work of Reich is still the most detailed prime resource on the topic of Male Orgasm and Orgasm in general. A Web search came up with 1 reference about male orgastic impotency and 3 about female impotency. Hopefully, some new books may have appeared. A listing stating that 2% of men are given to male orgastic impotency (Source: Haas & Haas, (1993) Understanding Human Sexuality) seems far too small compared to Reich's observations. I take this means absolute orgastic impotency for there are so many degrees.

Bogetta defines Reich's orgastic potentcy hypthesis as:

1. Biological readiness, "calm excitement", mutual pleasurable anticipation preceded by a spontaneous urge to enter, or be entered by the partner. Bodily tenderness. Increase of pleasure.

2. Movements are voluntary but effortless and rhythmical, unhurried and gentle. Extraneous thoughts are absent; there is absorption in the experience. Pleasurable sensations continue to increase. Periods of rest do not lead to a decrease of pleasure.

3. Excitation leads to involuntary contractions of the genital musculature (which precede ejaculation in the man and [I would note also in women who ejaculate] lead to the acme). The total body musculature participates with lively contractions as the excitation flows from the genital to the body. "Melting" sensations in the body. Clouding of consciousness at the acme.

4. Pleasant bodily and mental relaxation. Feeling of harmony with the partner. Strong desire for rest or sleep [in all sexes]. "After-glow."

Bogetta defines Reich's orgastic impotence hypthesis as:

1. Over- or under-excitement. "Cold" erection. "Dry" vagina. Foreplay insufficient of over-prolonged. Either: sadistic piercing by the man and rape fantesy by the woman [this can be reversed]. Or: fear of penetrating or being penetrated and decrease of pleasure at penetration. 2. Violent friction, nervous haste. Extraneous thoughs or fantasies are compulsively present. Preoccupation with sense of duty to one's partner and fear of "failure" or determination to "succeed". Period of rest likely to lead to a sharp drop in excitation.

3. Involuntary movements greatly reduced or in some cases absent altogether. Sensations remain localised in the genital and do not spread to the body as a whole. Involuntary responses may be simulated for the benefit of the partner. Squeezing and pushing, with spastic contraction, to achieve a climax. Head remains in control and the clouding of consciousness is absent.

4. Feelings of leaden exhaustion, disgust, repulsion, indifference or hatred towards partner. Excitation not fully discharged, sometimes leading to insomnia. Omne animal post coitum triste est.

To be continued... In 1956 All of Wilhelm Reich's books in the U.S. were burned.

Fight censorship wherever you find it.
